Independent eating is a gradual process. Along with patience, it's important to understand the various developmental milestones and to provide the appropriate feeding tools to help toddlers and children learn to eat independently. The milestones can be broadly categorised into the following age ranges:
Age 1 to 1.5: Naturally, toddlers first learn to hold utensils using the fist grip method as they develop more complex hand movements, such as forearm and hand coordination.
The design of the PICABOO Learning and Dining Cutlery Utensils features a bird-back curve that comfortably fits in a toddler's palm, enabling a secure grip on the handle. The short handle design also reduces awkward wrist tilt and shortens the distance from bowl to the mouth, which reduces food spills and helps toddlers build confidence through successful experiences.
Age 2 and up: As toddlers move into early childhood, they start using their thumb, index, and middle fingers to hold utensils. Gradually, they learn to use the three-point grip more skilfully, setting the stage for using chopsticks and writing tools such as pencils.
The PICABOO cutlery bird-back curve provides a snug fit for a child’s grip, conforming to ergonomic shapes that align perfectly with their palm. This design encourages the correct holding posture and gradually prepares them for using chopsticks and pencils in the future. Mastering the grip of utensils enhances hand muscle dexterity and strength, which contributes to improved writing stability and focus in learning.
The design of the PICABOO cutlery was achieved through collaboration with child development experts, occupational therapists, and award-winning designers from Red Dot and iF, who studied how children of various ages grip utensils as they continue to develop their motor skills. The PICABOO’s soothing colour palette also helps reduce anxiety for children who are learning to eat independently.
Proudly designed and made in Taiwan, our product materials are strictly vetted to be BPA and Phthalate free, and meet both the LFGB Food Contact Grade and FDA safety standards. Our products are produced by ISO 9001 certified manufacturers, guaranteeing high quality and reliability.
The entire set is dishwasher-safe and compatible with steam sterilizers.
